We develop our children academically, physically, socially & spiritually through programs guided by Buddhist Values.
HMS is conveniently located in lush Nuuanu Valley, three minutes from downtown Honolulu. We have a student body of about 330 students from preschool through eighth grade and our curriculum is accredited by Hawaii Association of Independent Schools and Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Our students receive individualized attention with teacher ratios of less than 18:1. Our preschool has been named “Best of the Best” in 2006, 2008 and 2009--- from the Honolulu Advertiser.
Our facilities are unique for an elementary and middle school with a computer center, gymnasium, swimming pool, library, and cafeteria. We offer a variety of after school programs ranging from our Fort Gakuen Japanese Language School, to aikido, judo, clay, robotics, and swimming. We participate in the local interscholastic league for volleyball and basketball where both girls and boys in grades 5 – 8 participate.
We were established in 1949, the first Buddhist school outside of Japan. Affiliated with the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, our mission and philosophy are rooted in Buddhist teachings and values. There is high parent participation in school events and we offer all of our children a values-based education.
